Big Five Game Drive Last Day: Back from the Bushveldt 20 June 2009

Our last morning at Camp Jabulani was relaxing. We had breakfast on the veranda and watched the sun come up. We had a mini game drive from the camp to the east gate, and this time Didi got to sit in the tracker seat. She had Carl wrapped around her finger and he broke all the rules by allowing her to sit there. (no seat belt). She did a great job spotting game. She saw impala, a dazzle of zebra, a wildebeest, and a yellow horn bill. Carl was impressed and Nadine was relieved Didi did not fall off.

The flight back to Cape Town was uneventful - we all slept.

Then we picked up our car. This was the only hiccup in the trip - the car, a Yaris, is smaller than a Fit - no trunk and little head room for Scott. So, after a bit of finageling, we are now driving a standard shift Renault mini van. At least Scott can sit up straight.

We opted to spring for a Tom Tom GPS and boy, are we glad we did. Nadine can read a map just fine, but it is nice to have Tom telling us where to turn before we miss the road. There are many, many rotaries in Cape Town - a lot of fun to enter from the left and even more fun to get off of. Scott was actually driving UNDER the speed limit.

After checking in to Table Bay Hotel we decided to drive to Table Mountain because visability was so good this evening. Very often the mountain is shrouded in low hanging clouds, obscuring the view.

We missed the last cable car to the top, so we took a slow drive up the mountain to the mid-point. We could see the sun setting over the mountains -what a sight!!

Dinner on the waterfont at a South African speciality restaurant called Karibu. We started with camembert and brie rolled in black and white seseme seeds and then deep fried. Didi had seseme chicken kabobs, Nadine had Malay curried chicken, and Scott had braised ox tail. Dessert was Death by Chocolate. We watched the charter boats come in and heard local street musicians playing instruments and dancing. Nadine discovered a local tea- Rooibos (Africaans for Red Bush).

Tomorrow we're thinking of taking the cable car to the top of Table Mountain and then heading to the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, weather permitting.
