Instead, Scott and Didi decided to go horseback riding and Nadine got a massage and facial. Everyone was happy.
After lunch, we had a private guide take us through the local limestone caves on the coast. The tide was going out so we were able to get to the caves, which are inaccessable at high tide, unless you want to swim. Given the near-freezing temperature of the Atlantic, we opted not to swim.
The caves were amazing real estate even back 10,000 years ago. Two different sets of humans inhabited the caves- first a set of true prehistoric humans and, much later, the indigenous bushmen lived in the caves.
After the caves, we packed up and headed towards Stellenbosch, in the heart of the wine country. Stellenbosch was originally a Dutch settlement and Africaans is spoken here much more than in Cape Town, which is more English-leaning.
We are staying at the d'Ouwe Werf Hotel (pronounced "Over Werf)- the oldest hotel in Stellenbosch (and probably South Africa as a whole). It is a beautiful old building but has all the 21st century amenities, except internet access.
Our suite has lovely oak furnishings and antique oriental rugs. Didi especially enjoyed the claw-footed bathtub, which was incredibly deep. The hotel is built around a courtyard and includes a beautiful, old lemon tree. The lemons were enormous!!
After enjoying the ambience of the hotel for a few hours, we walked to dinner at a resaurant called Wijnhaus (Wine House). Good thing we walked. Nadine and Scott have discovered an affinity for SA white wines. We enjoyed a bottle of vioghner from a local winery - Elgin Brothers. Didi had spring bok, Scott had a game platter (ostrich, spring bok, kudu, and sten bok), and Nadine had veal scallopini. Too full for dessert!
