Before leaving Cape Town we filled up the car with gas (called petrol in SA)- first time in over 20 years that either of us had been to a full service station! In SA all gas station are full service and the gas price is strictly regulated - it is the same at every station. Gas stations do not take credit cards, either - gas has to be be paid for in cash - good thing we knew that and had enough with us.
We took a leasurely drive along the coast - the weather cleared and we saw the most amazing rainbow over the water - we could actually see where it touched the water at each end!
Saw more baboons (didn't stop for any this time, however.).
We are staying at the Groot Bos Private Nature Reserve just outside of Hermanus. Groot Bos means "great bush" in Africaans. It protects the most amazing forest of milkwood trees. Very similar to our live oaks, these trees are enormous and were instrumental in ship building because of their size and density. Unfortunately, there are few milkwood trees left in South Africa.
We did a very energetic hike through the milkwood forest - very, very hilly. It was worth it though, to see a tree that was 800 years old.
Ever the romantic, Scott arranged for a beautiful bouquet of flowers, champagne, and chocolate in our suite to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. Our suite is gorgeous - lovely view of the sea. What an amazing place to spend our anniversary!
Dinner was out of this world. Our table overlooked the water, very close to a fireplace - the warmth seeped into our bones after that very brisk walk!!
Scott tried some local beer - he has decided he does not care for South African beer - too light tasting. Didi had smoked duck, Nadine had gnocchi, and Scott had a red fish in a light butter and lemon sauce. Wonderful desserts and cheese plate to finish off the night.
The winds have been howling, so we are not hopeful about a whale watch tomorrow.
